well its possible.... but its really not "coon hunting"... i cant speak for everybody else but i dont go out there just to kill somthin and carry it back to the truck to say i did it... coon huntin is about hard work you put in it an gettin to hear your dog work and get a coon up a tree... you should try finding somebody that coon hunts in your area and go with them... itll be alot more fun than walkin through the dark hoping to walk up on a layed up coon... i don't know what your guys rules are but in north dakota that is very illegal. up here you have to have a amber light until you get to the tree then you can use a normal one less than a 6 volt but thats only at the tree your dog is treein and not every other tree. if i was you and was really lookin for a coon in a tree i would go out in the day and find a den tree with a coon in it and try to work your dog around that den tree with that coon in it. just walk throught the woods during the day and look for holowed out trees with a hole the size of a coons head cause if they can get there head through then they will queez the rest of there body through find one of them with a coon in it and just leash your dog and try to get your dog to tree that tree and if he does that then your doin good and you can then always use that tree as a refresher for your dog when ever you want to see if he can tree. den trees are the easesy tree for a pup to learn on. if you kill a coon in its den then no other coon will ever use that den if there is coon blood in it.

you dont really HAVE to have a coon to train a dog to coon hunt.... take the dog in the woods and hunt the ##*%* out of em... run your dog with a older trained dog every once in a while... any dog can run up to a coon in a cage and bark at it... thats not exactly what your gonna be doin when your huntin... i think a caged coon is what ruined my pup... i showed it too many and now its out there lookin for a coon instead of usin her nose... just put em in the woods alot and find some experienced people around you to hunt with... they can teach you alot...

im kinda confused do you have a dog or not??? or just wanna kill a coon??? even if you do jacklight a coon hows that gonna help train a dog??? there should be some hound doggers around your area you could go hunting with a few times to show ya the ropes abit.
good luck.

If you're in an area that is thick with coon then you can wander around looking for eyes. When I decided to start coon hunting I didn't have even the foggiest idea of how to train a dog (didn't know about this site or walk with wick) and that's exactly what I did. We ran around the woods until I "treed" one. I shot it out and brought it home and basically just teased my dog with it. I didn't know anything else to do. So... if you're trying to introduce your dog to the coon smell that's one way, or a fresh roadkill is just as good. If the coon population is thick and healthy I really don't care if people spotlight, but for me personally there is no pride in a coon if my dog didn't tree it.
If you can find somebody to take you hunting with dogs I think you'll have a lot more fun. Try googling hound organizations in your state. There's also forums on this site for different regions, you might be able to find a fellow hunter that way. In the end you do what you gotta do, but think it through first and have a game plan :) Good luck and have fun!

If you have enough coon in your area to do this, then you probably have enough coon to find some roadkill. If your pups are ready to be started then you should take them to the woods and start hunting them. If they aren't ready to go to the woods with you then there's no reason to take a coon home to them yet. I got my first coon for my pup by going with a friend who had a good old dog. Then I took the coon down to the timber and made a long drag where he couldnt see me and put it up in a tree out of his reach. Did this once in the day and once at night. This is where you need to pet him up and work on the tree a little. After that I went out and got him on some real hot tracks by driving the dirt roads until one crossed in front of us. He ran and treed it a little ways into the ditch. After that I just started walking into the timber and he gradually started going further out and would tree easy coon. At this point it can help to take them on moist nights when the scent is better. Once they've treed a coon just start hunting them every chance you get. It may take 10 nights, it may take 200 but if they've done the other stuff decent they should turn out. I never had another dog to take with him, but if you have another dog that hunts good, just take him along and he'll figure it all out on his own.
