If you're in an area that is thick with coon then you can wander around looking for eyes. When I decided to start coon hunting I didn't have even the foggiest idea of how to train a dog (didn't know about this site or walk with wick) and that's exactly what I did. We ran around the woods until I "treed" one. I shot it out and brought it home and basically just teased my dog with it. I didn't know anything else to do. So... if you're trying to introduce your dog to the coon smell that's one way, or a fresh roadkill is just as good. If the coon population is thick and healthy I really don't care if people spotlight, but for me personally there is no pride in a coon if my dog didn't tree it.
If you can find somebody to take you hunting with dogs I think you'll have a lot more fun. Try googling hound organizations in your state. There's also forums on this site for different regions, you might be able to find a fellow hunter that way. In the end you do what you gotta do, but think it through first and have a game plan

Good luck and have fun!
