I'm not an expert, but I believe a catahoula is more of a herding or baying dog. Most people around here that have catahoulas use them for cattle herding or hog hunting.I hunt with a man that has some leopards that are tree dogs deluxe, though.

There is a leopard cur that is a breed of tree dog, the catahoula is called the leopard dog, state dog of Louisiana.. I have some bluetick/catahoula crosses that are shaping up to make some real gritty hounds. They will kill whatever they can catch on the ground, especially my game chickens...

I was just wonderin'... I have 2 seven month old female pups I have been taking out most evenings and just let them do what comes natural...I have encouraged them on the coons a little, and man they are doin' great! I put some pictures on ladeeraven's board, or you can see some @ http://groups.msn.com/dandycatahoulas They (son & dawgs)
did everything right... his first shot didn't kill the little devil, and hi came after the boy, nothin' pisses of a Catahoula more than somethin' or somebody threatenin' 'their' kid...lol.....that's when the fur began to fly!
They do make great stock dogs too, and are awesome watchdogs, pretty tough.

I raise houlas and hunt coons. I sale some to hog people and like bay compititions myself. Around here I don't have hogs so I hunt coons. They are silent on track and will tree fast, if they don't catch it on the ground and kill it themselves. I have walkers and red english and the houlas will do just as well as the hounds.

I've hunted cathoulas on coyote . They make a great kill dog ! Not as good on a track a a running walker . Just don't have the speed . I have two around the house now . Older one protects the house and tracks blood for me . The pup I got is about 3 months old think I am going to try her as a sq/coon dog . If she can't make that she will make a blood dog they are damn good at that ! All and all there is no better dog for the house then a catahoula ! I feel safe sleeping at night with 80lbs of dog that would rather die then let a stranger in my door sleeping next to me !!!

Does anyone run catahoulas? Im wanting to get a hunting dog for squirrels and coons. I also need one that is good at the house. I've looked at these and they sound good. Just wondering if anybody hunts with them.

Rick

They will tree a coon. My house dog is a catahoulla will tree a coon. Be careful with visitors; there very protective of their turf and family.
