Rule #1 Pick a bolder, more curious, explorative pup.
Rule #2 Picking before 7 weeks of age, you may as well close your eyes
Rule #3 Pick the pup that shows the most characteristics of the father or mother (which ever parent you Know the most about, and are the most impressed with.)

Things to look for:

Which pup looks the most like its father/mother(which ever parent I like the most)

How the pup perks its ears when you are talking to it. (If it perks its ears like its father and I really like its father I may tend to lean more toward this pup. Which parent is the pup most gaited like is another thing I look for,

The more characteristics I can observe of the parent I like the most, the more likely I will be to choose that pup, so long (of course) as this pup is bold, curious, and explorative.

Thats how I have been doing it for the past 38 years and it has worked reasonably well for me.

Gooood Luck!!!!

I personally prefer the runt of the litter. They usually got a lot of want to please and buddy up with you a little better but as long as you keep them from having to fight for food or attention from another dog cause they will get aggressive older they get for having to be that way to survive and usually the runt is a little cheaper to buy and feed Lol good luck what ever you get

The last two pups I bought the people I got them off had kids, so I told the kids to pick my pup for me, and both times it's worked out well!!!! Lol.

I don't think There's a foolproof way to pick a pup, though there's a lot of opinions on the matter Just pick the one that appeals to u the most.

Post subject:  Question about getting a new pup.

Well I got the go ahead to get a puppy and keep it in the house for a few months.
I'm going to go look at some walker puppies that were born at a animal shelter. If the mom looks good and I start looking over the 4 puppies that are left. How do I go about choosing one? What do you guys look for in a puppy?

I like to sit back and watch. I send my wife into the kennel to grab one. I watch what the pups do. Generally the all back into a corner and then its an explosion of puppies when she gets close. I look for any that come running up to her as a sign of confidence or aggression. I watch for any that are studying her. Any that just run wild for it are out.

My last dog sat back and waited. When all the pups blew out one direction he waited for her to go for them and went the other way. I said you're smart I'll take you.

best thing to do is trust your instinct

If I am raising a litter then I usually keep the one that no one else wants. However, if I am buying then I will pick the one that is the boldest.

Remember that their looks and breeding aren't 100% responsible for their success. Breeding can matter a lot but when the entire litter has the same breeding and you like that breeding they all have the same potential in the beginning. Watch them for a while to see how they act and pick one you'll be able to like. If they are a month or older so much the better since the personalities are showing a bit at that age. How you treat them and teach them has a lot to do with it so don't worry if you didn't get 1st pick. You'll have a good chance of turning the dog into what you would have wanted with patience.
