last two lion trails we have followed the coyotes have been not too far behind them. both trails tracked 6-7 miles with no cat caught or kill site. the dogs had followed them most of this distance but left it before we did. is this fairly common? it would seem plausible to me. possibility of a free or easy meal?

Years ago I was following a lion track on foot. I had a young pup with me so he wasn't open trailing. The cat crossed some bare ground, and I was trying to figure out which way he went. About that time I heard some coyotes howling just over the ridge. So I slipped up there to see what was going on. When I got there they were sniffing the ground. Then they would yip and howl and run a ways and do it again. I watched them for a while, there were two of them. Until they saw me and ran off. I went down where they were to see what was going on. They were on the lion track. They had been on it for about a hundred yards is all. I'm still not sure what they were doing they weren't really trailing. Mostly just running back and forth on the track and causing a commotion.

Coyotes get pretty savvy about how to get a free meal. They will run a lion off a kill every chance they get.
