Posted this on another site but only got one reply (good reply though).

Hello,
New to the site. Hunted a little with various canine breeds over the years and toying with the idea of getting a couple of hounds. Looking to hunt coon (~75%) and bobcat (~25%) .

As this is still in the planning (hoping) stage, I'm trying to figure out how really feasible it is and if a person could (likely) have a pair/duo that was equally good at both (running coon and bobcat). Were I live there are a fair number of cats, but not enugh to justify hounds for just that purpose. There are a bunch of coon here and more and more bear every year, which is a whole other topic. Not looking for a "quick fix". This would be more of a labor of love if you will. I'm able to hunt frequently close by as I live in a pretty rural area.

Just wondering what type of ideas and thoughts some of you guys who been in this position might have to offer. Also, guys that have hounds like this please chime in.

Lastly, I'm not partial to any breed but think I would like something with a meduim nose so I could enjoy the hunt versus putting them out on a hot track most of the time.

Good hunting and thanks.

Sure enough can have multi purpose hounds. Just be very willing to objectively evaluate your prospects. A good hound with game sense can and will show well on multiple game. My opinion is this. Life is just way too short to limit myself on being a "specialist" if you will on one game animal. In order to build a pack of dogs who can satisfy your needs, you absolutely must be willing to move away from the dogs who won't can't do it. This means you may well have to go through a bunch of dogs to do it. But, the short answer is this. Yes you can and yes it is worth the effort. Good luck, and welcome aboard!

Thanks,
Sounds like the possibility exist, but I have to do my part too. No issues there. I've ...mellowed in life and don't need instant results on things anymore. I don't have any illusions of getting dogs or pups that will run like champs the first time they're cut loose. Nice dream though.
I'll keep reading and hopefully my plan will come to fruition.
Thanks

I have seen lots of dogs run on more than one game and do very well. Ipersonaly know dogs that run on coon bear and coyote. Also have know dogs that run coon coyote and cat. To me getting your dog to run on anything depends on how much work and time you are willing to put in.

In my opinion, it is definetely possible. I think that the more game you can run with your dogs the better. If they are just "coon" dogs then they are only running coon season. However, if they are bear, cat, coon, coyote dogs, then they are runnin damn near all year and learnin to use their noses better. Of course, you may get a coyote run here and there in bear season but big deal, that happens. Overall, i think it benefits them. JMO

It is very possible. I personally run coons, cats and bear. I would stay away from competition bred dogs. I don't know about other breeds but with Blueticks try to find something with Vaughn, Smokey River or even Cameron blood closely in there ped. These dogs should be pretty good all around cold nosed "hunting" dogs. I have numbers for some people that have some of these dogs right now and in the near future. Give me a call if you'd like there numbers 406-598-0601 Chad.

I am in the same boat and thinking about getting one of my hounds started on bear. He has been started on coon, and so far has not been trashy and not needed any correction in that department. However, i know for a fact he will strike a bear track or on winding the scent. I had a bear not long ago raid my pups doghouse and his foodbowl one night while out hunting, when i came in to tie him up for the night i noticed his house had been flipped and the bear tracks leading to and from. I have no idea how old the scent was, but the pup threw a fit wanting after it. The next time i actually seen a bear from the truck with the pup in the box, he blew up in the box wanting after it.

My only problem with it is, i have one other hound that is straight on coon and i like that when i want to coon hunt, however the pup is the only other hound and i wouldnt want him running bear when hunted alone because he will probably go only 50 lbs or so and i dont think he will get much bigger. But i am gonna try to possible get going with somebody this coming bear seasons here and try packing him on bear some, just not 100% sure yet.

A Good Cat dog better Flat Smoke a Coon track And Make it look easy!

But a Good Coon Dog may not do worth a Crap on a Cat.

I think your question can be answered by what Quality of Cat Dog you want. The Better Quality Cat Dog, the less you'll want it chasing Coons.

What I consider a Cat Guy or Cat Dog, is a Guy/Dog that catches cats consistantly.. They catch them where there are coons, deer and coyotes, bear.. Dry, wet, snow. What ever.. they are Cat guys and that's what they Hunt. at times, We have to pass up 5 coon tracks or Bears to catch a Cat.

So If your Ok with a half ##*%* Cat dog, You can have a Really nice Coon Dog and catch a Cat once in a While.

For me it All comes down to your expectations of Cat hunting. Do you want to catch a Cat in the summer.. You'd better have a Cat dog... Or a Pack of Cat dogs.. If you want to catch coons, and send a Dog down a bobcat track in the Snow.. Then heck yea you can have both..

Good Luck!

I keep seeing posts refering to dogs being too small to be bear dogs. I have a hard time believing anyone would imagine a dog is going to stretch a bear. The pack that seems to tree the most bears in the southern Idaho area, in 100% Stephens curs. Not the largest, most powerful breed of dogs by far.

I prefer small dogs, they are easier on the feet, eat less feed, and you can put three in a box that will only fit one big dog. I would rather put three dogs on a bear over one once its jumped and a smaller dog will jump just as good as a big one anyway

The only advice that I can give you is if you want a very good Combination Dog or pair of Combination dogs get ahold of Waylon Bryant, as I always say he has the best selection of quality dogs that I have ever seen or owned I tell everyone this his dogs are hard to beat, let me know and I will pass on his info.
