Post subject:	Whelping Box Question?
I'm expecting my first litter of pure Bluff Creek Plotts and am going to build a whelping box and am looking for suggestions or ideas that others of you may have used on everything from size, material, height of walls, basically just everything. I'm wanting to build a box that will work both now and be durable enough to be used at a latter date. Thanks, Jim

Here's a picture of one I built for the last litter. I can't remember the dimensions, but believe it's about 41" long and this dog probably stands 20" at the shoulder. I set the 2x4 rails about 5 inches off the floor. The whole thing was built out of OSB and 2x4s, has a two piece lid that can be taken off or adjusted so that you can shine a heat lamp in, and can be taken apart easily. I used deck screws to hold the sides together. I took it apart a couple times, moved from the barn to the kennel and back to the garage due to the cold weather we had. Now I used indoor/outdoor carpet until the pups' eyes opened, then used straw as bedding. When I weaned the pups, they stayed in it out in the kennel.

ive always used my kids plastic swimmin pool...they cost bout 8 bucks and are easy to clean and seem to work really good. when the pups get bout 4-5 weeks they can jump out the top and start roamin around.

WIhounds I had thought about using the plastic pool, but I was in the mood to build something. SteveM I ended up building somewhat along the lines of what you had I went 48"x48" with the sides being 30" tall I ripped down 2"x4" for my rails and used 1/2" plywood. I cut a door into it and made it so it breaks down with the removal of 20 screws. I used to run down in the Charlotte area and am looking at a house down outside of Dickson. Jim

WIHounds thats a good idea with the swimming pool do you keep the pups inside or if its in the summer can they be outside cause ive heard if you have them inside they tend to smell real bad??

I've used the swimming pool and it does work well. Matter of fact, I used it for a few days with this litter in the garage. The only reason I went with the box this time is that it can be used in the kennel after whelping, offers more insulation from the cold, and the pups tend to find their way in easier after they climb out. Also, even though a swimming pool flexes, it doesn't offer quite the protection for new pups that the whelping rail does in a box. I've had a couple occassions where I had to move momma dog off a pup in the pool. It sure works, though, and I've used a pool twice now. Jim, we might have to put a short hunt together some time.

Post subject:	Having pups wanting to use a kiddie pool
I was thinking on using one of those kiddie pools but was a little concerned about the dam smasking them! Is there anyway I could construct some type of rail around it to let the pups have a better chance of survival. This is my first litter and I am a little nervous!!! Lol any help is very much appreciated!!! Thanks. Kris!!!

I THINK THE KID POOL WILL BE JUST FINE KRIS. THE GREYHOUND KENNEL I WORKED AT AS A TEEN USED THEM AND WE PUT SHREDDED PAPER IN THEM FROM THE BANK DUMPSTER. THE PAPER WAS ALOT CLEANER THAN ANY BEDDING YOU CAN BUY. JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET THE HARD PLASTIC POOL. GOOD LUCK GREG

I did something similar but no where near as nice back in 2007 and hope this one as easy as the other was to keep clean. Where as the other one was set-up to be a temporary set-up, this one will stay up. I have a plastic kiddie pool for the birthing process and then move everyone to the hograil section.

Hey buckshot What do you use for heat source for the pups for the first two weeks? And are you sure you don't wanna sell those whelping boxes for a business. You did a really nice job.

Shaggy, my whelping kennel is inside so no outside cold temps to worry about. I do use a electric heating pad to make sure they stay completely warm. Thanks on the compliment.
