Anybody like to use a handheld GPS? I just Got one and i cant wait to use it. |

I like mine. I used to do a ton of hunting out of State and it was very helpfull. Garmin Rhino. |

never go coonin without my magellan explorist i love mine it got me out of the woods tons of times |

I use mine all the time, too. I never go into the woods without it. I suggest You play with it and get familiar with the controls and features before you take it into the woods. I would walk around the block with it trying everything out. Another two suggestions. rechargeable batteries because they tend to eat 'AA' batteries for lunch and have a compass as a backup "just in case" |

I use deer hunter’s reflective tacks. I had a high end GPS, with the best of antennas and the folks at Bass Pro said, “You just need to walk to an opening in the trees, so the unit can connect to a satellite.” Now I just tack my way from the a path (or from the truck) to the tree. When two paths fork, I just tack the one that I need to take, and when I leave, I don’t remove them, so if I get turned around all I have to do is find any tack, even if it’s not from the same night, and I am out of there. I haven’t been even a little bit lost sense I started doing that. I was getting lost so much that I paid $500 buck for that GPS. I pay $1.99 for 50 tacks! |

We have some huge sections here where I run bobs. I tell ya I wouldn't go in the woods without mine. I think the thumb tacks would work, but hopefully I can get out of the woods before dark. It really save ya when ya get in there a couple of miles, just look at your gps and go to the closest logging road, radio the guy at the truck and have him pick ya up. Saves a lot of leg work. I hunt in the deepest woods with mine and I have never had a problem getting a signal. early this season It went on the fritz and wouldn't lock on a signal but I call to the folks at Magellan and they walked me through a reset procedure and all is well. I even keep it buried in my jacket pocket and it stays locked in. |

I think that Santa may be putting one under my tree this year. I have been looking at the Magellin Explorist. Looks like a nice little unit. |

the explorist is nice, Mike. They are pretty rugged and have some nice features. |

gps may be nice and well we use that on chartplotting for offshore fishing but if ya a mile in the woods and it goes out then what .... good ole pins they may be cheap but they get us back to the truck |

I bought the explorist 200 from walmart and the thing is great. It has got me out the woods a number of times when people with there compases was getting confused. The only thing I would say is to practice in your yard first befor you take it to the woods. good luck and good hunting |

One good point. If you do go into some deep woods, it is a good idea to keep a compass and a small map of the area as a backup. I just print them out on my printer and keep them in my wallet with my backup compass. |

ya them magellan gps units are durable ive dropped mine in the water it tokk about 15minutes to find it i thought well gotta get me a new one this unit is still workin been submereged in water dropped kicked everything and still goin im wantin to upgrade to one of the better ones i just got the explorist 100 the 100 is a good unit easy to learn im wonderin how good the more expensive ones are |
