I am making some new chains today for spare and this is the first time I will use S hooks. How do you close them? A hammer and a vise do not work cuz it smashes them. I know there is a tool for it but $150 just to close a few of them? No way!

:) go to a parts house or probably Wal-mart and get a chain tool that closes them for around $5 to 10 dollars, It's just like a pair of pliers that hooks on them. That's what I use, and I close hundreds of them on chain tree tie leads.

Any chance of getting a picture? The guys at the hardware store have no idea except for the expensive tool. That is 2 hardware stores but then again that is not uncommon around here.

I have tried the channel locks but I seem to smash both ends at once. I will try again.
