If you don't have money for a box then I'd just get bells and name plates. Don't worry about these fellas who think you're commiting a sin by not being able to afford collars. I hunted for 2 years before I got my first system. My success rate is the exact same before and after tracking systems. 100%. I can only think of one time off the top of my head where I wouldn't have gotten the dog back had I not had a collar and all I got back was a corpse anyway. He fell off a cliff while lion hunting. It was nice to find the dog and know he just wasn't wandering around in someones back yard but thats the only time in 15 years that I can say the collars did more than save time and gas. That being said. I run collars because a tracking system will pay for itself in no time with gas at $3 a gallon. Like these other guys said, buy a collar and borrow a box if you lose your dog. One thing though is that after about 24 hours unless the dog is in a HOLE, your phone will ring more often then you'll find a dog with a tracking system.
up until a few months ago i never used a tracking collar. i bought a used f&l system for $300 and ill never cut another dog with out one. they may seem like alot of money but they are worth it.
about a month ago i dropped a dog out saturday night and treed in a den then we walked up a litlle more then she just left the country she was gone for 6 days and we looked everynight. needless to say guess what was on my christmas list!!
