I just got a pup that is 9 months old he is a little skidish and was super thin when I got him about a week ago since then I have put weight on him and got him his shots been hunting with some friends of mine with killer dogs and he will take off like he's goin with them bt after bout 30 yards or so comes back to me now I'm just guessin couse I don't know but he eather ain't been in the woods much or he's been abused witch would account for the skiddish thing so I guess I'm going to have to start from scratch and see where he's at just wondering what yall thought? And yall's opinion on where to go from hear

Could be he was trained to stay close, walked on a leash, or stay in the yard too. I have this problem with my dogs because my wife trains them to be house pets. They think they do the right thing by not running off. Takes a while to teach them the difference. I start with a caged coon let them get going on it in the cage then cut it loose and hold them back. Let it get some distance in a field then let them chase it. Eventually they'll keep after it. Loosing them in the woods seems to make it worse but if you have a pen you can leave them for a few days that would help. Keep taking them to the woods and don't even look at them. Take them to new woods and don't pay them a lick of attention. They want to go explore and they want you to go with them. Eventually the urge will over take them and they'll run off. At least that's what I do and it seems to work well.

at only 9 months old he probly has not been to the woods much.
he is just still young and don't know nothing yet. which most of the time is a plus for you. hopefully he has not been messed with much at all,,, so there is less chance someone else has cross threaded him.
as far as him going with your friends dogs,,, if he aint comfortable with them and know them he won't go with em. I always kennel my pup near the dog im gonna start it with. lets them socialize and become buddies. then the pup is more apt to hang with them. its much better to start him with just one dog he knows and with only that one dog. not a couple. 2 grown coondogs blast off together pretty hard and fast for a pup to keep up with. starting a pup with 2 grown coondogs will often get the pup to chase barking. and then he may chase bark the rest of his life when another dog gets off ahead of him.
when he comes back don't let him stand around by you.. put him back in the dog box..
even if and after you get him to treeing released coon you will still have to teach him to go into the dark woods to find them.
the longer you hunt him with other dogs the longer it will take you to get him to hunt alone. its a mistake a lot of guys make starting pups with other dogs. as soon as he shows he has an increased interest in coon start hunting him alone some. don't wait for him to start tracking and treeing with the other dog.... the other dog only exposes him to coon,, just like released coon for him will do. its exposing him to coon. its just to get him wanting them. you or the other dog "does not" teach a pup how to track or how to tree. just WHAT to track and tree by being exposed to coon.. a coondog pup has it bred in to track and tree on anything it wants bad enough. a 6 week old pup will track and tree a hotdog by scent if you get him to like and want them.you just have to get him to want coon bad enough and if he has it bred into him he will do it. once he is wanting coon, hunt him alone. I hope this gives you a more clear idea of how to bring your pup along and how his pea brain works....
and a better focus as far as what , why and how to get pups to start hunting raccoons.

Well Thank you. I'm actually only on my second coon dog. I grew up training beagles on rabbits most of my life (i'm only 34). My last hound did get an HTX. I've only been running coon dogs for 5 years but I do it 5 nights a week. I'm addicted. I'm actually glad my wife said no more beagles after the last one got too old. Stick with it, get out there and you'll have fun.
