I adopted a 2 year old tree walker and I've been doing scent drag training and about 75% of the time he'll actually find the drag where I hide it. But when he runs the scent he doesn't actually run it. I'll bring him to the starting point and let him sniff it and then let him go. He'll put his nose in the air after sniffing the starting spot and will take off in the direction of the drag and "tree" the drag. I hide him inside when I do it so I know he isn't watching me hide it. Is this normal? Is he learning bad habits? Will he be able to tree raccoons like that? I'm new to this type of hunting and dog training and want to make sure I am doing this correctly

you don't actually teach a dog to track or to tree. its bred in.. you teach him what to track and tree. if you get the dog so it wants something bad enough it will use its bred in tools to track it, find it, then tree bark for it.
