Post subject:  How to ease a lost dog back into hunting

A new hound I bought the 16th escaped his pen that night. I just got him back the 27th when by some miracle he wondered into the animal control facility in town, 6 miles away from where he first got out, and 12 miles from the last area he was spotted. He is very thin and I'm focusing on getting weight on him for the next 2, 3, or 4 weeks. My question is how should I start him back hunting after we get him back to where he needs to be? What kind if problems should I be expecting?

i would suggest a good working tracking system.
cause you can probly expect to lose him again.
and remember, just cause you got a tracker collar on a dog don't mean you will be able to catch him.
as far as him being on the wild for the time he was gone. its not gonna make him any more or any less of a coondog then what he was before he escaped.

Just get some weight on him then start hunting him..Even being a little thin should not hurt him.......I own a dog that was lost for 45 days.He was lost while hunting.Found 75 miles away..He was treed and caught by a local hunter..He didnt have his tracking collar on... I think he was stolen while hunting.Or found and they just took him.Nobody really knows what happened with him..I bought the dog and I still own him to this day.Hes always been a nice dog for me.But I never cut him loose without a tracking collar on him....LOL...I have some buddys that has really nice kennels. But no top on them.My dogs would climb right out (but not theres)..LOL..Ive also had dogs chew right through chain link fence and get out.I had one chew out of a metal building also. That had to hurt ...LOL.

Toe cutter, why do you say to expect to loose him again? Curious.

Haha that is true. He is suppose to be a dog that goes until he gets treed.

You should have a tracking collar on every dog your hunting.Even a pup while walking in a woods in the daytime..Its just peace of mind knowning you can find them if they take off .Or get caught by someone and they chain them up in the yard..Ive had that done twice this year with some young dogs...LOL...It also saves a lot of time hunting looking for a dog .Back when I started hunting we didnt have trackers. Most guys didnt even have a good light...LOL...

I have a Garmin system on my dogs when ever they are not on the pen. I was just wondering if he meant the dog will just wonder a long wats away instead of hunting.

HE MAY HAVE JUST NOT HUNG AROUND CAUSE EVERYTHING WAS STRANGE TO HIM,WITH IT BEING THE FIRST NIGHT YOU HAD HIM AND ALL.
30 YRS AGO I BOUGHT A DOG NAMED RANGER, I TURNED HIM LOOSE TO HUNT FOR THE FIRST TIME AND I HAVE NOT SEEN HIM AGAIN TO THIS DAY. I GEUSS HE IS STILL RANGE-ING.
I USE TO CARRY A TRANSMISSION FUNNEL, IT WAS MY FIRST TRACKING SYSTEM.

Did you hunt with the dog before you bought it??????.Some dogs will not hunt without another dog along. Even if its a pup that wont do anything..You need to hunt any new dog 30 nights at least. To know what kind of dog you have..Some dogs can fool you and look great with other dogs .But couldnt tree a coon alone if there life depended on it...LOL..

No I didn't, a trusted friend of mine had and I took his word on it. When the dog came back this time I threw his butt back in the woods. Then he became the dog I was told he was. He went a mile and had the meat up a tree. Coon def weren't moving but he got it done. Hopefully he is back to normal now.
