just bought a 2 year old walker male last night. tracks and trees its own, gand upper pedigree, lowerside is grand on closer ancestors but ch or pr on further ancestors. the only flaw of this dog is it will try to work out a cold track, it will not slick but it will just try to work and work that cold one unless it gets on a hot one. any tips?

shock him for what? he is doing what he is bred for! if you want a dog that only takes a hot track i would put him up for sale and find a hot nosed dog. just remember you won't see as many coons with the hot nosed dog. not trying to be a smart @SS just dont see the dog has done anything wrong yet.

Not a chance you should shock that dog for working a coon track. You will ruin him. There is nothing you can do about him having a cold nose or working on them tracks. If he is boo hooing around all night and you absolutely know he won't work it out go pull him off and drop somewhere different. Do not shock him for doing what he was trained to do.

I bet they go through a bunch of dogs...LOL...Theres no such thing as a 100% perfect dog..All dogs have faults some just have (A LOT) fewer than others....Ive seen dogs that would trail for hours if you let them.If they cant move a track just pull them off it.Most guys just dont have all night to wait on a dog. They have to work the next day.Even though they might still tree the coon. Why waste time on one track. When you could tree alot more easy coon...The way they breed coonhounds today they will slick tree . Some are just not as bad as others..Night hunt bred dogs win because they are quick treedogs..Most of the really nice pleasure dogs are not real quick treedogs ..But you can win with them too..

if you have the time i wouldnt pull him off, unless he is just going back and fourth in one little area. only way he will ever learn to push a track is to let him learn how to. you cant teach him, you can only give him the time to try.time in the woods will make him faster and people that just pull their dogs off everytime they get hung up will only have half the dog they could possibly be.

if you want him to get better trailing cold tracks you have to let him learn how.

Sounds like a good dog to me, if they aren't willing to work those old cold tracks then I have no use for em. In the winter and during the rut this dog will tree more coon for ya than any hot nosed dog.

try to think he is two, once he learns tricks of the trade he will move that cold track like a hot nosed dog moves a hot track. As long as my hounds tree coon, I don't really care how they do it JMO. Hot ones are nice. But the older tracks that take a hr. Just makes a better hound.
