try hunting him by hisself, some dogs will never be independent but by hunting him by hisself you will know if you got a coon dog or not. if the dog goes to treeing coons by hisself he will gain confidence in hisself and he want be follering other dogs around waiting for them to tree a coon. i really dont know how long to tell you to hunt the dog by hisself cause i dont know how old he is, but if hes over 2 year old and you aint seeing no coons with him by summer after hunting him alot, i would be thinking seroius about getting another dog. this is just my opinion

every dog is different, your dog might go at 10 months old but he might not.ive had dogs at 10 months old that all they wanted to do is play and they turned out pretty good later on after hunting them quite alot. i wouldnt give up on him if he aint acting like a old dog at 10 months old. this time next year i think you should know if hes for real or not. good luck with your puppy.

...Pups usually just start at 8-12 months old..On average most dogs are finnished out at 2-3 years old if hunted enough. If not hunted enough it could be a lot older..Most pups just dont turn out to be keepers.Thats a really good dog you want to keep until they die..
