Is it easier to train a pup who has never seen a coon or is it easier to train and older do who has never seen a coon? |

Just according to the dog, but the old addage of can't teach an old dog new tricks is a bunch of bull. One of the best coon dogs I was ever in the woods with was in a fenced in yard in the middle of the city until she was 3. |

No matter what way you go. Its going to take 1-3 years to make a really good dog out of them...If a guy is just starting out. The best way to go is Buying a well broke older dog.That way you have a dog you can hunt right now.You can always work with other dogs.But It can take a while to find one that you really like and want to keep..Very few young dogs turn out to be keepers.... |

Bud its all in the hunter I am 25 I have been in the woods all my life.... the best way to train a dog is to have a old dog one that is slow and accurate. But I started out with a dog that was three never seen a Coon and been in the house its life... I started out by getting a Coon hide and having him chase after it... kept taking him to the woods at night when he started tracking the hide I took Coon scent and put it all over my sisters cats then he started tracking and treeing a little bit.... when he came on to that I got a caged Coon for him let him see it in the day light.... he treed it after a bit.... and three night's later treed his first Coon by myself.... chet gave you the best advice, if you are just starting out find you a dog that already does it the way you want and buy it. many many old guys will tell you that no one could run fast enough to give them a puppy or dog to "train"... its a long road from puppy to coondog and like chet said, aint alot of them that make the grade and dogs are around 3 before you will see the faults that were made during training or breeding that keep them from being coondogs. |
