Post subject:  Won't touch a dead coon
It's my first year hunting coon with my own dog and I bought a black and tan pup, she tracks and bawls tree real good on a skin or drag and will bite down on it but when I showed her a dead coon I caught in a trap she wouldn't go within a few feet of it. Any ideas how I can break her of the habit? Iv never had her on a live coon either though too

Get a little yapping dog and have it make a fuss and a lot of racket your pup will come in barking cause that little yapper got all excited and pet her up if she responds and start barking on it. Then put the coon where she can't see it then take her somewhere with timber let the coon go and wait till it hits the timber which it might take 10 to 15 minutes turn her loose

Thanks, next time I get a coon in a cage Ill try that or even dead one. And do you by anychance know if running a dog on a drag to much can ruin the dog? Iv run her about 6 or 7 times and Shea doing great but I didn't know if I would over do it

First thing how old is the pup????...Yes cage coon and drags can mess up a pup if done to much and to early.You only want to do drags enough to get a pup treeing.Then only 2-3 times at the most once they start treeing.You want them to tree by scent (not) by seeing the coon up a tree..Most dogs never need to see a cage coon.Cage coon should only be used if you cant get a pup started any other way.And never before a year old...Some of the best dogs wont have anything to do with a dead coon or even a live coon in a cage....

She's a little over 8 months old now and another thing when we ran the drag she took right off but we let her go by herself she won't go farther then about 70 yards I assumed that just because she's young though

The average pup just starts at 8-12 months old.So dont worry about the pup it takes time to get most pups going..Ive known a lot of guys thats hunted Black- tans over the years. Ive owned a few also..Most wont even mess with hunt training there Black-n-tan pups until they are a year old..Most guys feel they turn out better in the long run.If you let them mature more ..

I have a 3y/o walker female that will not have a thing to do with a coon dead or alive. Trying to shoot one out to her is a waste because she will not touch it.

yep, a dog ain't got to fight and kill coon to run and tree them.
as far as the b & t dog. jerk the dead coon around and pull it away from her. make her think it is running from her. pups want to chase what runs from them. just like a school yrd bully. they only chase the ones that run from them. the kid that stands his ground the bully don't want nothin to do with them. a coon in a cage or even a dead one to a pup is standing its ground.
