I recently got a two year old Black and Tan, he's not trained for hunting, so my question isn't a hunting training question. My new dog "bear" darts out of the house door and takes off up the street, not even looking back. Makes me so frustrated... Can anyone give me some tips to stop this behavior.

Sean

First off u won't b able to stop their drive to hunt. Second u need to work on the come command but even when he knows that he won't always come to u. Third u need to get that dog as much exercise as u can. That will cut down on the want to run away. Most important in my opinion is the excercise. These dogs need it otherwise he could tturn into a real handful. If u need more info u can always pm me. Gd luck and enjoy ur new dog

My saving grace has been a treadmill. Sounds weird but you can get a older one for cheap. Mine jogs for 5 miles everyday. I walk him for 1mile at the start and 1 mile after he's jogged 3 miles. I don't run him hard cause I don't want the abuse on his knees and elbows. He's a house dog and I've noticed he has changed his attitude greatly. On days we train for hunting he doesn't run. He seems to know when I grab his leash it's coon time. Any other time he's curled up on couch.

Sounds like you just need lots of obedience training. Where I live there are several dog areas that are fenced in at community play grounds. Either that or a 50'-100' rope & work on calling him back
