I got a female walker that is 15 months old I need a little help with. She has been hunting with other dogs and isn't afraid to go out by herself. Most of the time she doesn't stay with the other dogs and does her own thing. I don't know if this is good or not. I took her out last night by herself. She would run around and go out in the woods like she was hunting. The problem is she will hunt anything she smells. Especially deer. I have showed her 2 caged coons and she showed a little bit of interest. What should I do to get her to start treeing coons?

she may take more interest in the coon if you turn it out of the cage and let it run off away from her and then let her chase after it.. you need to trigger her prey drive on the coon.

I had a dog that did the same exact thing. I never winded up keeping it; it didn't make a coon dog. However, toe cutter has some good info to listen to.

I'd cut the coons out of the cage right in front of her and shoot some coon down to her. Praise her every chance you can on only coon. Then take her to a deer lot. If you have a shock collar cut her loose but stay by. As soon as she so much as takes a step towards a deer shock her and I yell no deer (opinions vary with the yelling). If you don't have a shocker use a good amount of rope as a leash. When she starts after then give a yank that takes her off her feet and scold the hell out of her.

1st step is to research and talk to as many coon hunters as possible. Go buy you a good shocking system and every evening go turn the dog out on a deer. When it make it's first bark, while trailing the deer light it up and don't say anything till the dog gets back to you, then tell it to load up. As long as your having problems repeat the process. Hunt a minimum of 3 nights a week. You'll learn by his bark when he's on something he's not supposed to be on and light him up. Just don't get to crazy with the e-collar. Last, be patient. It took me 2 yrs to get my dog right, and he was 1 yr old when I bought him.

Thanks for all the help Yall! I am gonna try and get a live trap set out tomorrow. What type of shocking system would Yall recommend? I haven't got much money so what can I expect to have to pay?

Me and my buddy bought one together. You might find a refurbished one. I wouldn't by the cheap wal-mart ones.

Some of the very best dogs. Show no interest in cage coon at all. Your better off letting a dog find a dead coon in a woods. Then do a few drags.Just enough to get a dog interested..Will she run coon at all or showed any interest in treeing at all??..I guess she already runs deer???..
