I recently had a situation when hunting where I could not get to my dog that was treed, he swam a small creek but too deep to walk across and no way of getting a boat down there. I was wondering what the best way to train him to be called off a tree without confusing him

That is very hard. I've had that happen too. I always lead them away from the tree with the command "dead coon". Even if I don't shoot it down. That way if I have to call them I can call "dead coon come" it confuses them but eventually they've come. I've also found this helps so they don't go back to a tree they've already been to that night. Sometimes though you just have to wait it out. Like loosing a hound that has gone silent because he doesn't want to go in for the night yet.

Agree but I always hesitate especially on a young dog to tone when they're tree'd. Personally I only ton after I've given a command and they didn't respond. If it really came to it yeah I would do it.
