My dog is 3 yrs old but has been hunted very little. Tring to hunt him hard right now. He will take a track and tree it in 5 min and them the next 3 or 4 will trail all night and never get treed. He trailed last night for over a hour and half and went right at a mile. I pulled him off of it finally. Is he just taking bad tracks? If so whats the best way to handle that? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like he can tree a hot track or a easy coon if he runs and trees in a short time on some.. I would think the trailing tracks are not coon or old cold tracks he is trying to trail. I would watch him and try and figure out if he is back tracking too. The only thing i can think of to figure it out is to put him with a good check dog and try and figure out what yours is actually doing on those long trailing tracks. If he is wallering (boo hoo ing) around on the long tracks he won't learn anything if you just let him. Once I saw he couldn't do much with a track I would get him off it and try to get him on a good track.
