first off that is way to young to show the dog a caged coon wait until atleast 10 months |

too young, put the dog up and try in a month. I would wait two months if it were me. Don't pressure the dog, just let it be a pup. |

there are so many other training steps you should do before showing a dog a caged coon. and dont show him a caged coon until at least 8 months. |

Let that coon go and work on leash obedience and loading in the dog box. There is no reason to mess with a 5 month old pup on a real coon. I would wait until it is at least 8 to 10 months old, minimum. |

How a pup re-acts to a cage coon.Has nothing to do with them making a good dog or not..Some of the most worthless dog will try to rip open a cage and kill the coon.Some of the (very best) wont even look at a cage coon...........I feel a cage coon should only be tryed. If you have tried everything else first.....Thats at 11-12 months old or so...The reason. is the last thing I want my dog to do.Is have to see a coon to show any interest..Most dogs that make it will show interest in treeing. Just walking them in the woods alone in the day time.I take my dogs out one at a time and just watch them to see what they do..Most dogs that make good treedogs will smell up the sides of trees..That shows me they are tree mined.You can start doing that in the day time at about 6 months old.Thats when some dogs start showing interest in hunting ...The average dog just starts at 8-12 months old .So theres no reason to get into a big hurry with any pup .Id rather take my time with a pup. Than try and get them running and treeing at a young age...I feel dogs that you take your time with. Turn out a lot better in the end. |

So on Saturday my buddy and I went and picked up his first redbone its a 5 month old and he is a great lookin dog but only problem is he hasn't bayed or barked and I'm worried that he never learned how as crazy as it sounds I've got a 6 Month old bluetick and he is working drags and has got a good chop mouth on him do you think he'll take the other pup under his wing and show em the way I need opinions. Some dogs take a lil time. I got a red bone he took a while to get him to tree and even longer to get him to open on track. Took a lot of working him on drags and woods time with other dogs. He progresses slowly but surely and gets a lil better every time he goes hunting. He ain't close to being finished but it's fun all the same he will get there eventually. I am pretty new to coonhounds but I have coached wrestling for a while, some kids are gifted and get it right off the bat and are good others got to work a while to get it but when they do get it watch out cause they are tough and end up a lil better off in my opinion. I've been told that a lot of redbones start late, my redbone started early and is now taking forever to finish. You can't judge a dog that young, all it takes is one thing to make it click in their mind and then it's on. Just keep workin with it. |

Also remember some dogs will never get excited and bark over a drag or a caged coon, and whether they do or not has absolutely nothing to do with whether they'll turn out to be coondawgs. Also at 5 mos there's no way to tell at all what he's gonna be like when he's finished at 4 years old. Keith |
