Also remember some dogs will never get excited and bark over a drag or a caged coon, and whether they do or not has absolutely nothing to do with whether they'll turn out to be coondawgs. Also at 5 mos there's no way to tell at all what he's gonna be like when he's finished at 4 years old.

This is a very true statement. I have a 3 year old walker female that could careless about a cage coon , drag or one shot out to her but will tree you a truck load.... Very accurate!!!

Yeah Canadian Hillbilly is right, just the other night we were workin with 3 bluetick pups that are 11 months old. One of the pups had no interest in the coon at all while it was in the cage. When we turned it loose tho, it was a whole different story. So the fact that the dog won't bark at a cage isn't an indicator of what kinda dog its gonna be.

I recently showed my 6 month old bluetick his first live caged coon and was all over it and I've had him treeing drags and he ain't gun shy either would you think its safe to say he's on his way to a decent coon dog

Yeah I would say so, just don't over use a caged coon. Get him out with a BROKE dog, one that wont teach him any bad habits and will put him under coon. After he starts showin ya something with another dog, start huntin him alone. Just remember, a dog don't need to see a coon to be a coon dog.
