MTcoonHunter, usually when they are nusiance barking they ain't paying me any attention if I don't yell before walking up to them and changinging their focus.

i thought this thread was going to be tips on hitting your dog.lol. seriously, here is a tip. there are times when it might be appropriate to physically strike, but not harm your hound. if you hold the dog up and go at his underside with your boot it's not as likely to make him cow down from you as striking from above with your hand.

Ow!!! That sounds mean. Lol!! I'd worry about doing internal damage striking a dog that way, but that's just me. I am one if the types that try to mentally relate to a dog and not use a heavy hand. Some might call that a sissy, but whatever works for each person.

As far as striking or kicking a dog..its not worth it. Discipline yea. I learned why not 2 kick a dog by watching a buddy of mine. He had a young bluetick gyp. I had about a 12-14 month old pup. They was both trying 2 drink out of a small puddle. The female bluetick would snap and growl at the other pup every time the pup would tried 2 get a drink of water. Well after about 3 times of this he kicked the dog(not hard at all either) the dog made about 5-6 steps backwards begin to twitch a little and shake. Fell over dead as a door nail. Freaked us all out. Had never in my life seen something like that happen. I mean he didn't kick the dog hard. I don't know if it was scared 2 death or what...weird stuff. So I don't kick my dogs.

notice i said "strike but not harm". don't kick like you're in a UFC fight and you will inflict noticeable pain without injuring the dog. hey, some of us hunted before shock collars were invented and had to do something besides stand there and look stupid.

Showme, I'm not knocking hoe anyone disciplines their dog. Hope you didn't take it that way. I've not ever used a shock collar, but also I'm just getting into the coondawg scene, so all of my experience has been with training pleasure dogs/ house dogs with general manners and what-not.

no problem. i am not much for beating or shocking a dog, either, but there are times when it is appropriate. hounds can be awfully hard headed sometimes.

I have to disagree that dogs don't understand English. When I yell "shut up and get in the box" they do just that. On hitting you dog, a switch does good when they are in reach and an shocker does the trick out to a mile. :)
