It all depends on the load you shoot. What are you trying to shoot at such a long range? What I have seen is that some who use a 10 ga. will shoot at things that are way out of range. I saw that with geese hunting, guys skybusting and you could tell they bumped the birds but lots of them kept on going. Or you would take a bird that someone had hit a day or two before and they had one or two pellets in their gut...whew...what a mess and not worth eating. Best thing is to know what your personal effective range limit is no matter what you are shooting and stay inside that distance as much as you can.

The 12 ga. 3.5 loads will thump you about as much as a regular 10 ga. load. Both are at the top end of pushing the limit on effective kill range for a shotgun.

thats very useful info you gave.... i was actually wondering the same thing as the fella who posted this. id imagion the 12 ga 3.5 would have less recoil though right?

I don't know which has more recoil but both loads are at the top of the kabooom scale. Better to learn to hunt with regular loads since heavier loads don't make you a better hunter. Heavier loads do tend to teach young hunters to flinch, twitch and hesitate on the trigger. All of which can unlearn ya a lot of good hunting skills.

Switch the discussion over to which bow is best, 45 lb draw or 70 lb? Neither is better but one can't make up for poor hunting ability. To many people figure if they are confident they need more horsepower or firepower.

If you enjoy getting beat up and going deaf shoot the heaviest load you can buy. I guarantee you after a while you will either get tired of it or develop some bad habits from trying to hard.

All depends on what ammo you have. Most companies put feet per second on the box as well as the size of load. A majority of the time the 3.5 twelve is equal to a 10 guage both in range and recoil. Recoil can be worse with the 12 as they are lighter then alot of the 10's. The 12 is much more versatile these days, around here 10 gauge ammo can be hard to find.

That guy has for sure earned his man card, that's more than I can afford to shoot or stand to hold for long.
Did any of you ever see the old 8 ga. punt guns the commercial duck hunter used to shoot? They would set up a rest on the bow of their boats and drift in close to flocks of ducks and geese then shoot them on or as they rose off the water. I heard stories they would load up with bits of scrap iron and cut up nails. Makes you glad they came up with game laws to make that illegal.

i understand this really answering the question, BUT i love the 3.5 in the 12 gauge because i can use the same shotgun for EVERYTHING, and YES the 3.5 will completely match up against the 10 gauge, every yard, foot, and inch, in my opinion, just make sure u get a pump though, they are EXTREMELY reliable, especially during the frozen goose season.
