I am buying a new coon rifle and I don't know if I should go with a Marlin or Ruger. Personally my dad has owned a Marlin and he said he really liked it. Just trying to get some more personal opinions on these rifles and which one may be a better quality.

I agree with BluetickFever, the Ruger 10/22 is the best and most reliable .22 ever made. They did cheapen them up in the last few years; they switched from a nice walnut stock to a birch stock with a cheaper finish. They also made this new clip release that is huge and in the way that I don't care for, but regardless of those two flaws, there is no other .22 that will match it for anything. Other companies would not make after-market parts and accessories for the 10/22 if they didn't believe that it would be around for a long time to come. Just my opinion.

I have a marlin, and have friends with ruger. They are both good guns. The ruger 10/22 has all kind of things you can add to it. The marlin don't have much you can do to change it. People say the ruger shoots better, no it doesn't. I have tried, they shoot about the same. the marllin is half the price. If you want to dress it up alot buy ruger, if you want a good gun for a good price buy marlin. They are both great guns.

marlin makes a good gun, but ruger makes a GREAT gun you couldnt ask for a more accurate 22.

I have a marlin 60 stainless , it's a great gun I have never coon hunted with it I do use it squirrel hunting, it's has a longer and thicker barrel so it's heavier. That's why I don't pack it coon hunting.
I also have 2 ruger 10/22 an old one that I got at a gun show 20 years ago and one I bought off a man needin some cash to pay some bills. The old one is a heck of a rifle the new model is cheaper, I do like the bigger mag release though. I do not like the cast or stamped whatever receiver!! But they both shoot great never jam.
I also have a Remington 597 my brother bought for my son. It will jam and once in a while not feed right? But this gun has been givin the worst test it can take and is the one that normally shoots the coon or squirrel or whatever were hunting,(the boy does most the shooting) its much quieter than the ruger and just plain tough. He set it down on the creekbank and it slid down and into the creek. Once I left it in the wood for a week thru 2 snowstorms still always works. Most will say this guns junk and there right mine is its rusty its scratched but(if it don't jam) it will put a bullet in the eye of a possum in the top of a cottonwood

Well I fixed the cracked stock on my dads Marlin Model 995 with wood glue and then added 5/50 cord wrap around the spot where it was cracked for extra durability. Also added a scope and sling. So I think I'll just use my dads Marlin .22 Model 995

This is my dad's Marlin .22 Model 995. That grip wrap is 5/50 cord by the way. If you wanna know how to wrap it then just ask and I will let you know how to do it.
