.22LR. Why spend more for a box of 50 than a box of 500? Less racket to scare pups. That and ive never been impressed with 22 mags and .17 HMR's for coonhunting. Now, in a pistol Id rather have the 22mag or 17hmr. Makes up for the loss of barrel length

radar82 wrote: Wow I can't belive how many people use 22's, 4-10 all the way!!! I have owned two different 4-10 shotguns. The first one I got was from walmart. It was about average length. Single shot. Shot 3 inch shells. I tried both #4 and #6 shot in it. If the coon was in a big tree you could forget it. I shot directly at it 3 times and my buddy thought i was just a horrible shot. I handed it to him and he shot 7 straight times directly at the coon. A few were #4 shots and a few were #6 shots. THat coon never even blinked or moved. That happened several times so I gave up on that shotgun and sold it. Last year I bought a mossberg pump 4-10 with a full choke and a 28 inch barrell. I figured this would do the trick. I was very dissapointed. Same story. If the coon was 20 or 25 foot up then it was fine. But if the coon ever went in the top of a big tree there was no hope.

the 17 and 22 mags are illegal here in mississippi. shotguns must be #6 shot or smaller. i like to hunt with my remington nylon 66 22auto with a scope very light weight gun.
