Ive wanted to buy one for a while and was wondering if theyll do 200 yards and if I buy one from savge if it will have the same shooting quality if it is 200 or 350 if both have the heavy barrels for accuracy.

savage makes a very accurate gun....as accurate as any...dont let the price fool u..what they lack in eye poppin looks they make up for in durablity, relaibility and price. dont expect the 17 to reach too far out...they can ..but with that light bullet..there better be no or little wind..if uwant to reach 200 + id go with a 204 223 er 22250....also good rounds ar the 22hornets and lil heavier..243 and .7mm 08...i rreallly like the looks of the new 243 25 and 223 short mag also...

They will do 200 yards on a day where there is not much wind. For my part the .17 hmr is useless. If im going to shoot Coyotes i will use my .22-250 and if I'm coon or squirrel hunting i will use .22 LR. JMO
Here's a target at 100 yards with my .17HMR.
It'll do that good at 200 yards with no wind.
As was said above, it's not good for coyotes in my opinion unless it's 50 or 75 yards maybe.
The .22mag has it's place but when talking 150- 200+ yards it loses any advantage it may have over the .17HMR.
I don't think the .22mag or the .17HMR is good for any big animal at those ranges..ie coyote feral dogs or cats and such unless you don't want to kill them.
The .17HMR is a great round and so is the .22mag for that matter but when you want to shoot and kill stuff at these ranges, I'd use something better made for the job, .223, 22-250, 25.06, 243.
actually past 100 yards a .22mag still has the advantage---because of its bigger bullet it will not drift as easily as the 17 grain bullet the .17 has--The .22mag may lose some strength but still is more accurate.
While it is true B.C. is not as good for the .17HMR as compared to the .22mag, to say the .22mag is more accurate than the .17HMR is incorrect. Up to 100 yards I think both are great and it wouldn't matter which one you use depending on what your shooting but after that range the .22 loses any advantage.
Some people don't seem to know how to shoot like they used to. A man or woman, who knows their gun is going to be deadly with either rifle.
I used to have a chart somewhere to show the bullet drop for afew rounds, the .22mag and .17HMR included. If I find it on my computer, I'll put it up.
The reason I have a .17HMR is because of the bullet design. The V-max is a good bullet to be shooting in area's where there maybe people around because the bullet is fragile and will fragment without very much danger of it going on past your target and hitting someone or something else. I load V-max bullets in my 30.06 and it's just death to groundhogs, coyotes or crows. That's all I've shot with the 06' V-max anyway.
I own a savage 17hmr and I love it. Accurate, durable and light. I can put 10 shots in the size of a dime with mine at 100 yards, I think that's pretty good. At long range on large animals it loses some of it's glammer. I have shot foxes and bobcats with it under 100 yards and was very pleased with its performance.
