I have been looking at a new 17 HMR and I have narrowed it down to 3. I am looking at the CZ452 Varmit, Marlin 917VSF, and the Ruger K77/17-VMBBZ. I was wondering if anyone has shot these guns side by side or have shot more than one of them. I am wondering what kind of accuracy to expect out of each one on avg. without alot of extra work. Also what you liked and disliked about them. Any info. on them would be appreciated.

i've always heard savage made the best 17. that CZ is a good looking gun (if i bought a new 22 i think i would buy a CZ). the 77 to me is still bulky and fat like a 10/22. never liked a marlin 22 never liked the way they felt when you throw it up. all this is JMO. my vote...CZ.

Id go with either but the cz just dont like the bolt handle configuration it makes you have to set your scope a lot higher that you should have to to clear the scope.

I looked at all those also but I ended up going with the savage with the accutrigger. I like to be able to adjust it to barely touch it and it goes off. and it is a tack driver and light. I use it for coon and I carry it around with a flashlight on it. and mine has the reg. barrel too.

I have a marlin 917 great gun I did a little work on the trigger to smoothen it lighten pull mounted a Nikon prostaff 3x9 scope awesome combo, have not had a CZ did have savage .22 worked good for about 2 years then would not eject empty shells a buddy bought one had same trouble we both now use marlins sold the savages I do like the accutrigger and their centerfire rifles but I will be avoiding the rimfires myself, my marlin is heavy it has a bull type barrel can shoot squirrels at 100yds. with it

I own a Savage and I really like it.

I started out with the HM2 and switched to the HMR

I have shot the Marlin and I really do not see a difference between the two guns. The fellows Marlin HMR I shot had a Basix trigger and like mine,it had the heavy bull barrel.

I think the Basix trigger is alot better than the accu-trigger.Then again most after market stuff is a little better

It's impossible for the .17 hmr to shoot that flat. Sighted in at 100 and still dead on at 200 yards? 1" low at 300 yards? The centerfire .17 Rem shooting pills at 4000 fps won't even do that. If I sight in my 22-250 for 200 yards it's about 1 1/4" high at 100 yards and a good 5" low at 300. The HMR won't even come close to that.

Might want to check the effect of scope height before you call BS......

Zace: you might want to check your fact before callin someone out on the carpet. Check this:
Image

You'll see that with a scope 1.5" above the barrel a HMR sighted in at 100 yards is 8.54" low at 200 yards and 35.72" low at 300 yards. When sighted in at 200 yards the HMR is 4.27" high at 100 yards and around 22.92" low at 300 yards.

What exactly were you saying again?

Click on the pic for an enlarged image with readable data.
