Here in wi I used to try everything, but now I just soak the food in warm water till it won't soak up anymore & then feed it. It is the only water they get all winter. Been doing it for 5 yrs now. Sounds like same thing that the guy from new york does.

Im in ontario Canada so it is below freezing for at least 4 or 5 months a year. dogs get fresh water every night with there feed and when that freezes there is lots of snow on the ground for them to get a little water

Works great, never have to break ice. I made these after a buddy lost a good bird dog to chewing on a cord. Now I don't worry, they can't get to the cord.

well i havent done it for the dogs water buckets but for our horses we take a 55 gal plastic barrel and cut it in half then stuff it in 2 or 3 simi truck tires with hay and sawdust inside them it works Great i been thinkin about a bucket they sell in western cataloges that fit right in a car tire that probly work and the dogs be less likely to dump over there water buckets to

I built one like Toe Cutters and they do work well. I use a 75 watt bulb and it will keep it unfrozen till about 10 degrees or so.
