at about 9 pm we dump the buckets and fill buckets back up in the morning and dump again at night.. only fill halfway though.. this helps from the whole bucket freezing up the electric buckets work as long as you know your dog won't chew them! |

I go to Fleet Farm and get those black rubber bowls and use them. They are flexable even when freezing and when it does freeze the ice comes out in one big chunk. I give them water 3 times a day and dump it after 10 minutes. The heated bowls are nice but the plastic will crack and then you have to run a long extension cord plus they may chew on the cord. |

Just put in the heated bowls 3rd season they work great. Covered the ext. cord with conduit to protect it, have had no problems check them each time I feed. |

I take my dry dog food and hydrate it with warm water for a while, and then feed the dogs all thru the long upstate ny winters. |

We don't have to worry to much about ice here but I bought submersible fish tank heaters to put in my buckets. I cut a small hole 1/4 of the way down from the top of the bucket slide the tube heaters through the hole and fill the bucket with water then make sure my buckets are in the corner of the kennel so the dogs can not chew the electical cord (same reason I cut the hole in the bucket to keep the cord from going over the top of the bucket) and run the cords out to on out door extention cord and cover all the connections to keep water out |

I read once where you can posthole dig straight down about 3 feet and set in clay drain tiles. Put a bell tile on the top that your waterbucket will fit in. Supposedly, the difference in temperature below the ground will keep the water from freezing on all but the coldest of nights. I have cement in my kennels, but I'm going to try it one of these days. |

I have yet to find a good way , but my dogs have . They just spill their water so there is none to freeze . LOL... |

One thing I do that works pretty well is... build a wooden box and cut a circle for a 5 gallon bucket to sit down in it.. then I fill the box with straw and hay... and set the bucket down in it.. the straw and hay insulates the bucket.. and it keeps the water from freezing for awhile.. |

I broke down and bought some of those five gallon rubberized buckets with a 150 watt heat coil in them........works great! They are kinda pricey, and ran around $42.00 each, plus power cords and electricity. But I figured what the heck, I have the money and those dogs are like family. ike |

Yep, sounds like my place LOL. One thing I do in the winter months is I alway pour fresh water into the dogs food when they are fed. At least they are getting that good watering for the day. I also notice in the cold winter months that my dogs learn to tank up pretty quick before it freezes. I am constantly worried about them getting enough water in the winter. I might just try the three foot hole idea. That sounds like it just might work. |

Old Bess, I don't have any pictures, just heard about it. Makes good sense to me, especially in this country where the frost line is only about 18" deep. I might pick up a few tiles and try it even though it wouldn't work in my kennels without tearing out concrete. Least I could say whether it works or not. |
