After you have scraped all of the fat off the hide, get you a 5 gallon bucket and put four gallons of water in it. Add a sack of pickling salt, a can of alum, and a small bottle of Neatsfoot oil right into the water. Put the hide in and make it sink to the bottom. Work the hide every day by pulling, twisting, and jerking. In 10-12 days you will have a tanned hide that will last a lifetime. Take it out of the mixture and wash it thoroughly with clean fresh water. Let it dry and you're good to go.

There are many ways to tan hides pending whether you want hair on or hair off. the above technique is an excellent one.It has become a lost art and the skill of tanning was best known by the Native American Indians. An easy way to brain tan is replace brains or brain by using Hog Lard or vegetable shortening. And the post care with neatsfoot oil. Larry's Hurricane Black and tans Sheridan, Arkansas
