Mike,

25 years ago I would send coon to a place and they would tan them for less than $20. Now a days lots of hand work like that would take many hours. Even at $5. an hour a coon could run into 2x 3x that price.
I have been trapping and coon hunting for 50 years and am just now getting good at tanning. Anybody can kill a coon, shoot one, trap one, hound one or even pick up a road kill and skin it. Skinning is easy.
Tanning is easy too and amounts to soaking the hide in different liquids and working it over a board.

All the work involved in tanning a coon is in fleshing. If one knows how to flesh a coon fast and clean, skinning, tanning and making the hide into a perfect wall hanger which will last 50 years is nothing.
Fleshing is all the work and that is what I have been learning.
I got a curved fleshing knife and made a fleshing beam a few years ago
and I will get better and faster as time goes by.

A southern coon brings $2. now and they brought $15. in the 70's , down to $12. during the 80's, but $2.?
That is for a coon hide sold to a country fur buyer.
Now a tanned coon, a wall hanger, tanned and wall ready should bring $35. $40. even $50. for a good one, 1970-80- or now,
if tanned and market ready.
And since they last forever unlike a raw hide which is perishable and must be sold then there is no hurry to sell. I just dust them.

I make knives and sell them at gun shows and the coon are used as attention getters at gun shows. A piece of plywood with 20-30 coon hanging on it is a good attention getter. If I set up way at the back of the market hall gun show 100 yards from the door people can see the furs way in the back and become interested. The coon help sell knives and the knives help sell the coon. Tan them your self and get full price for them not a dollar or two. All that you need to know is how to flesh hides fast and well.

Use 'Rittles' tanning formula and get a fleshing knife
{I use an used $8. knife, not an expensive one} and good luck.

Thank you...♪

I dont think $20.00 bucks is asking too much for a coon hide if you consider the time and percisoin it takes to complete a hide preserving and or tanning its alot of work, I've been tanning, stuffing, preserving hides of all types for over a year now, coons exspecialy are oily, Therefore take longer then most.
