I like to take a couple of cheap knives that i wouldn't mind losing  .just make sure they take and hold an edge and take a knife sharpener with ya.

one that is comfortable in your hand and holds a good edge. i carry a buck knife has about a 3" blade. it cost me like $30 but holds a great edge and i skin everything with it.

I have about 10 old case knives never been sharpen, all trappers,Stainless steel is best if you are not going take care of a knife, takes longer to put a edge on them, the only fault I have with a trapper it is heavy in your pocket,A buck is a very good knife. a hand made dunn is a knife.best steel stays sharp.

Havalon piranta
Uses disposable scalpel blades and costs $35 at cabelas.com or through vandykestaxidermy.com
Blades I use are #60 and ate about 2.5 inches long. If you you don't cut through hair and hit a lot of bone they stay sharp for many animals. Skinned six coyotes with one blade! Good for any skinning job.

What brand knives do you all use for skinning? What holds an edge longest?

I use a havalon piranta. They now offer many different styles but all use replaceable surgical blades. I use the #60 blades in mine. The blades I use are about 2.5 inches long and cost about 5 or 6 dollars per 12 but you can buy them by the 100 cheaper. If you dont cut thru too much hair or hit too much bone they will skin many animals per blade. I have skinned as many as 6 coyotes with a blade and 4 deer with another. Knife comes with a sheath, 12 blades and costs 35 to 40 dollars. Cabelas, van dykes taxidermy and nitelite all carry them. I love mine. When blade does dull just pop it off and pop a new one on.

Yes you can get stainless steel or carbon blades and in different sizes from I believe #20 to #60. They also have a bigger knife for filleting fish with a bigger handle and like a 7" blade. Any normal scapel blade will fit my knife.
