Place the trap around water (look for coon tracks) or food they eat like sweet corn patch.Old barns and buildings is also a good place to catch a coon .You will always catch things you dont want....Like wild house cats, possums and things like that..I use dry dog food, or a ear of coon with honey on it.Some guys use honey buns....

I have used sardines and they work but now I use peanut butter bread. the bread seems to catch mainly coons where the sardines would catch a possum along with coons.

sardines work great... one thing i might recommend if you use a can of sardines is take some fishing line and secure the can to the back of the cage...i had a coon messing with me and would either tip the cage or could fit its paws in the cage and move the sardines underneath the trip gate.. I had to move the set to another location... and after tying the sardines to the back of the cage i caught a possum one the first check and a big bore on the second set.. hope that will help you a little

No, it just pushed the can of sardines under the trip gate on my live trap so it wouldnt set off. There was enough angle left over for it to eat the sardines and walk off without the gate ever tripping.

After 6 days, it's probably time to move the trap.

Sparty, you can go to a hardware store or Tractor supply and get wire mesh that's small enough that a coon can't reach thru it.All you have to do is cut four 12"x12" squares and cover the top, sides, and back. The ground obviously takes care of the bottom.Since I did this my catch- to lost bait ratio has doubled.

Also, if you're using sardines, tuna, or cat food for bait, take it out of the can and put it in the very back of the trap.Coons will chew on the can and choke to death or cut the inside of their mouth horribly.I've lost nice restock coons to both.

Not the bait, the cage, so the coon can't reach in and move the bait around.

Most traps are pretty long, you're only covering 12 inches of the back of the trap, where the trigger is and the bait should be placed. The door should be left alone.
