Next Fall I'd like to do a little bobcat trapping, specifically in live traps. I want to be able to release small cats and young females without the risk of injury to the cats. Just wanted to start a discussion on trap placement, lure, flagging .....anything and everything that might help us all out.
Does anyone conceal the steel wire floor of the trap? Or will a cat go ahead and step on the metal floor?
I personally will be trapping high acreage areas, with a low cat density.
Looking forward to your replies.

There is a fella in the SW that is having very good success using live traps for bobcats. He covers the floor with dirt and brushes in the sides and tops making a nice cubby, which are deadly on cats. I believe one of the keys to his success is he uses the guillotine type doors that drop straight down. He also uses traps that are higher then normal coon traps, in the 15 to 18 inch high range. He uses flagging or feathers and a good cat gland lure. He also places his bait and lure in a hole under the trap and pan. He cuts some notches in his door to help stop the wind playing havock with his raised doors and he camo paints his doors to hide them from Johnny Sneakums. He sets near travel crossings, toilets and near log crossings over streams.

Hey Machias- that is some killer info!
I never thought of the log crossings on creeks.
Other than visual aids, have you heard of a scent lure better than others on getting cats to 'commit to the cage' ?

Log crossings are my favorite spot for a snare for bobcats. Any good glandular lure will work. Good luck and post some photos of all them spots!!

that sounds like a good idea! i've always wanted to trap bobcats using live traps, but i also didnt think it would work. i've only seen one wild bobcat in my whole life around where i live. but during mating season we hear them howling once or twice, man is that a terrible sound!

I know we aint got as many as most people down here. But what i do is buy the bigger type live traps. And we put tuna in it. And they come in it with no prob. We didn't really do the whole leaves in the bottom thing. But it did work better. We'd take limbs though and lay on the sides.
works good on fox to :]

Guys, cats are as easy as coons to trap. They're just not plentyful. As stated before, set up your live traps as a cubby set. The hardest thing to get the cat to do is commit far enough into the trap to catch him. Be sure the wire floor is completely covered with dirt, but not enough to effect your trip pan. As far as scents, if you are using scent alone, a combo of beaver castor and cat musk/gland works great.
Just remember that the outside of your set is just as important as the inside. You must first catch his eye, then catch his nose, and lastly catch him.
I have been a professional trapper for over 16 years now. You can pm me anytime for any kind of trapping tips.
