I doubt you'll have much luck catching a red fox in a cage trap. Maybe a pup, but the older ones are just too leery to squeeze into something like that. A gray fox will occasionally go into one, but not a red. If you really have your heart set on catching one, get your hands on a good foothold trap or a snare, then study up on a few fox sets.

clintb is right. footholds are the way to go. 1.5 is the size you need and dye and wax them. if you don't want to use footholds i have seen adc's use extemely lrge cage traps to relocate them.12x12 isn't even close. even though they can fit there to skiddish to go inside.

Ive seen numerous reds caught in cage traps, best thing to do is make the trap not look like a trap, try to make it appear more of a hole or den. Set sticks agaist it, put is next to a hay bale, put boarda around it so it doesnt show the wire. Reds are a lot more leary than greys, leg old traps are the best. if you want him alive to turn loose or sell to fox pens, make sure your using the rubber jaw. Once you have him. just pin his head to the ground with a forked stick, grab him around the neck and he is puddy in your hands, dont have to use the stick if your experienced with live foxes, but If I were you I would use a stick pin his head down first.

hog catcher thats sorta wat i was thinkin, but i never did get the help that i actually needed. if there was no was to trap them in a cage trap, then how do the nuisance contral do it. they cant always use foot traps because chance of catchin pets n watnot. i was jus hopin 2 get some advice from some1 with cage trapping experience that had been succesful. i still havn tried, lol buti will 1 of these days. setting traps and havin 2 go to school is all jus too inconvienient

adc's normally use extremely large over sized cage traps. Can you get a fox in a 12x12 cage trap maybe i guess you cold get lucky and has been done. If this is something you really wanted to do i would recommend getting a trap at least twice that size. Hog catcher did you ever catch fox consistently in a 12x12 trap. If so i 'd like to maybe see some pics of your setup and how this is done. always willing to learn something new.
