well i guess you could but when you do that something else will break and a ujoint is cheaper and easyer to get to and fix then other pieces in the axle

Do you drive the Jeep up and down the road, or is it a trail-only vehicle? And what axles did you put in it?

Does the yoke have u bolts that hold the u- joint, or does it have the curved straps with bolts that thread into the yoke? If you have the straps w/ bolts, the thread may be stripped on the yoke part. If that is the case, drill the hole out a little and get a longer grade8 bolt and stick it all the way thru and put a nut and lock washer on the other side. I wouldn't weld the cap, if you warp it the needle bearings inside won't be able to function properly, and if the u joint can't come out, something a whole lot more expensive will. You may even check to be sure the parts store is giving you the right size u joint. If the cap is just a little too small, and can move around at all, it's not going to last long. You may also check the driveshaft to see if it's warped and binding. We can figure this out- I've broken and Jerry- rigged more driveshafts while rock crawling than a dog's got fleas.

YOU CANT WELD NEAR OR ON ANY TYPE BEARING CAUSE THE HEAT WILL SIEZE THE BEARING.

Do not weld and use a grade 5 only. Grade 8 is stronger but much more britle.

got a story on that,,,
i had a custom made drive shaft i welded on my trike. we were in missouri for a national trike-in and my caps started working out on my universal joint. came across a fellow that had a little mig welder, put a couple heavy tacks on it. lasted bout 3000 miles till i changed it out that winter.
i would never recommend anyone doin this of course

You don't need to go any bigger- just drill it out so the threads on the inside are gone. Make SURE you use a lock washer, and I'd probably even put a drop of loctite on it.
