Thaught I might try here first. I bought a 1990 4X4 GMC half ton truck. It is all stock and is in really good shape but the odometer doesn't work. The speed does just not the odometer. It quit working at 114,000 in January. Anybody seen this before? (Jamie)James Ramey.

Well I had this to happen in my 95 ford that I use to have with an electronic odometer. . . . .and it was just a fuse!!!
If it isn't an electronic I'd check the cable where it goes into the transmission
and see if the end of it is stripped . . . . If not the cable may be broken or the other end might be stripped where it hooks into the odometer itself.

It's hard to diagnose the problem without being there. . . . .sorry!!!!

james, if the speedometer is working the speed sensor out of the tranny or t-case is working fine. from what you say, there is a small electronic motor on the back of the instrument cluster that is bad. maybe you can find a cluster from a salvage yard and replace the motor.

be careful as the plastic on there is very delicate and stuff can break very easy. i have seen many of these go bad. you could try a gm dealership, but i guarantee it will be a ton of money.

ask a salvage yard if they have a cluster with damaged or missing gauges to buy that little motor of off.

good luck.
