One of my hobbies is building 4 wheel drives, and here's what I think- If you put big enough tires on the truck, you're gonna need a lift kit- a '98 Toyota has IFS, and the lifts are expensive and difficult to put on. If the tires are REALLY bigger, you need to go to a lower gear to turn them- again, expensive and difficult to install. If the tires are big enough and the lift is high enough, your dogs aren't gonna be able to jump into the truck and you're gonna get filthy helping them in after a long hunt. As far as a HUNTING truck, get you a good winch that will go on the front or back of the truck, and just fix stuff or upgrade as you break stuff while hunting.

Put some 31x10.50 Mud Tires, a Locker in the Rearend, and a Good Winch. Thats all you need for a Good Hunting Truck. You start lifting it and it becomes unreliable. Still got a solid Truck thats Dependable, Gets good MPGs, and fits through the Woods easy.

I HAVE A 1992 TOYOTA PICKUP EXT CAB 4X4. IT HAS A V6 AND I HAVE MAXXIS BUCKSHOT 31X10.50X15 AND IT IS PERFECT FOR HUNTING.MY BUDDIES HAVE TOYOTAS ALSO WITH THE 4CYL AND 6CYL AND WE ALL RUN 31 BUCKSHOT AND THEY WILL AMAZE YOU!! THE TRUCKS ARE "HUNTING TRUCKS" NOT "MUD BOGGERS" BUT THEY WILL GET YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO GO, AND PLACES THAT YOU WILL THINK YOU CAN'T GO AND PROBABLY SHOULDN'T GO TOO. THE BUCKSHOTS GIVE GREAT MUD PERFORMANCE GOOD MILEAGE PER TIRE AND THEY ARE NOT BAD ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE HAD SUPER SWAMPERS, BF GOODRICHS AND COOPER MUD TIRES AND THE BUCKSHOTS WERE THE BEST HANDS DOWN FOR MONEY AND LONGEVITY. THE SUPER SWAMPERS WERE THE ABSOLUTE BEST MUD TIRE I HAVE EVER USED OR SEEN IN THE MUD, BUT AND A BIG BUT I ONLY GOT ABOUT 10,000 MILES OF WEAR OUT OF THEM. I HOPE THIS HELPS!! GOOD LUCK.

If you are wantin to save some money you can flip the bottom leaf springs on your truck and it will raise your rearend up about 3 inches and it want squat your truck when you load it down but you will have a rougher ride.
