My truck idles fine when its not acting up. Its when it is running so rough that it wont idle. For example....tonight I pulled up to a stop sign. The truck was running fine til I got almost stopped. Then it died. I started it....it barely stayed running long enough for me to touch the gas. Smoke was rollin outta the exhaust. I had to start it 4 times. The first 3 it started like that. All 3 times as soon as I touched the gas the engine either "chugged" real hard....or the engine didn't respond to the gas peddle at all except to idle rougher. The 4th it finally started fine....and didn't give me anymore problems.

My uncle is a mechanic and he said he couldnt think what the problem might be since its only doing it occasionally. I certainly dont know what it is. Been givin me fits though I do know that

mine ('92 22 re) will run good then will start to act up by revving to about 2000 rpms and fall to idle the rise back to 2000, i do have a k&n, a friend told me that they will act this way when they are low of water, dont know if it was a fluke but i topped off the radiator, prolly didn't have to put more than a pint or pint and a half to fill it, and i haven't had the problem in a while.

The IAC will increase idle speed when you have the AC on or defrost and in 4WD. Usually 200-400rpm additional.

Level of coolant makes no difference on idle except in extreme cases when it is very low and the CTS does not get a good reading so the ECM has to go from a stored set to adjust idle speed based on throttle imput otherwise termed limp in mode.

i'm thinking the drag from the transfer case brings the idle down and smoothes it out or something. toyotas are manual transfer case and manual lock out hubs....................TC
I HAVE A 90 TOYOTA TRUCK WITH THE 22RE, MINE WAS DOING THE SAME THING THERE IS A COUPLE THINGS IT COULD BE ONE IS THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE OR IT COULD BE THE AIR METTERING CONTROL ON THE AIR INTAKE. CHECK THOSE AND SEE IF THAT IS IT.

On my 91 toyota there is a vacuum line that goes to the tranny and the transfer case. both attach at the top, so maybe they are hiding.

i've worked on many lil toyota 4x4,but my friends 92 has a strange idle problem. when it idles it goes up and down,if you engage the transfer case into 4 wheel high it smooths out. put it back in 2 wheel high and its up and down again..........? there is no vacume line or wires that are hooked to the transfer case that would cause this.it does it in or out of gear. any ideas?..its a 4 cyl, 5 speed 22re............TC

you said there arent any vacuum lines going to the transfer case but if the truck has auto locking hubs it may have vacuum going to an acctuator switch mounted on the front differential.. this is what kicks your hubs in and out...

naw,he had his air/fuel mixture screw all but shut off. opened it up and it is running fine now.it was just the extra drag from the transfer case engaged causing it to drop down.
thanks for the help though.
my chevy has a voes for the transfer case and lock outs. but older toyotas are the old manual jobs.

yea they go to reving up and down when they are down on water. its because the water jacket heats the fast idle choke on em. they got alot of dang vacum lines and water tubes running everywhere for such little motors.
