i now own a 88 chevy silverado short box step side and i was wondering when chevy changed the plug style from square to round for the four wheel drive actuator? i tried a 91 actuator but the plug was a round style instead of square? so i wasnt sure if an 89 or 90 actuator would work or if id have to buy an 88 ?

any advice would be much apperciated

Go with the '88. That was the first year they did all tht stuff, including the IFS front end and the NP241 transfer case, and alot of it was experimental, so it's hard to say which parts made it another year or two and which didn't. I had an '88 and I got so tired of rebuilding the front end every time I used 4 wd that I jerked out the entire front end, transmission, and transfer case and put a stright axle front end in it with a TH 400 and NP 205 T case. I also got rid of the crappy 10 bolt rear end and upgraded to a 14 bolt. The TBI 350 was about the only thing that survived the swap.

yee mine has the throttle body injection to lol lots of power....

did you have a stock exhaust or did you upgrade that? i want something that sounds good but im told that putting on headers will make it run like a bag of ##*%* in the winter. is that true? whats a good choice for a muffler that will make it sound sexy? lol i want something that'll give it that almost stock car sound....tried a cherry bomb vortec single in dual out in 3 inch then i tried a flowmaster 40 series in 2 3/4 single in single out. now i have a cherry bomb glass pack. i was thinking about getting a dyno max race bullet ?

Coleman what did you give for the 205? I eventually want to switch out my 208 to the 205 on the 87.

You don't want to put headers on that truck. Everything is tuned and you have some sensors and stuff that you'll have to make spots in your headers for. A good muffler man can do it, all it really comes down to is drilling holes and welding nuts so the sensors will thread into the pipes- but for no more than you gain, it's really not worth the trouble. I had Flownmaster 40's on my old Chevy, and they sounded great, but I put Magna Flows on the F 150 I have now and they sounded awesome. I took them off when I lesed some land to deer hunt and had to drive thru a few backyards to get there- the people were nice enough to let me drive thru their yards and save a half mile of walking, so I figured I'd be nice enough not to rattle their windows at 5 am on Saturdays.

Techno, I paid $200 bucks for the 205- it was a divorce mount, which worked well, because I had a well- built TH400, but it was a long shaft out of an old Impala, so of course a regular case would not bolt up. I eventually started rock crawling and made that case a twin- stick so I could disengage each axle as needed and put it in my rock buggy. Why don't you like your 208? Your passengers tired of having to hold their feet on the shifter to keep it in 4LO? Been there, done that.

youngmiller thats a nice looker there!! The deifference in body style between the 87 and the 88 is huge! Hvae you any recent pictures of her?

Coleman I havn't had any problems with the 208 like you speak of.I have used 4LO plenty of times and have never had it slip out.The bulletproof idea of the gear appeals to me more than the chain breaking does.

so i cheaped out and went to the local scrap yard and asked the guy if he had any chev 4x4 actuators kicking around for an older model chev he said he had one that he just took out of a 96 and i told him i needed an 88 he told me that nothing changed and that everything changed in 97 and that it would plug in and work fine. so i bought it for 30 bucks go home through it in and still no four wheel drive. it sounds like it wants to engage but it wont...i checked the linkage and all fuses but it still wont go in to four wheel drive .....any ideas?

it wouldnt have anything to do with the eltronic torque converter being unplugged would it ?

The torque converter won't affect the transfer case engaging. Is it push button or does it have a shifter to engage the transfer case?
