I had an 87 ford ranger and the same thing happened to me. One of the springs in the hub gave out. Its a quick check just turn the hub and if you can feel the spring tension and hear it click in and out when you turn it at least you know that part is working. If it turns and doesn't click you might have a broke spring. I picked up a used hub at a junk yard for about $20 and it was a pretty easy fix. Not much more than pulling off the tire and removing a couple retaining clips and the hub slid off the spindle. Then just do everything in reverse to put it back together. I also put a little grease in the hub before install just to be on the safe side. Total time was about a half hour to 45 min

i have worked on several trucks like yours... tell me has anyone done work on the hubs recently?... i have worked on at least three of those trucks that when the person before me put the outer cog back ion they turnd=ed it backwards so the gears on the cog would barely cog in.. this happens very often in these trucks.. call me at 423-921-2761...hope you have luck...
