2 meter radios are awesome! we use them bear hunting, ragne is dependent of bunch of things but the handheld units seem to have a range of just over 1.5 miles (flat ground down here though). I would recommend the yaesu brand radios. my buddy dropped his in a mudhole (completely submerged it) pulled it right back out of the water and kept talkin. Ebay is the easiest way top get them, $150+ depending on the model you get. The VX170 is what we use, thinking about upgrading to a dual transciever (so I can also track dogs with it). Just be sure of the band that the model(s) covers, don't really want to be talking too much on the gov channels if you know what I mean. be glad to help more if you're interested,, I know alot about these things, would recommend them to anyone whop wants to stay off public air bands.

Happy Hunting!
