you'll hear different traits attributed to various breeds, but the truth is it's really strains within each breed. i've heard walkers with little squealy voices and some that if i closed my eyes i would have thought they were old fashioned blue or black dogs. same goes for speed and nose. generally blue and black dogs get credit for the best nose and walkers get credit for speed. as far as being loud i'll keep my ol' gascons. i like their cold noses as well.

thanx!!

has english dogs been known for anything inparticular?

i know this is a moot point cause as you said there are differant strains and dogs that go from one extreme to another in every breed. but i know breeds have thier reputations, right or wrong, and i was just curious.

The English dogs I have been around have all been VERY smart and easy to train. They are for the most part good honest hounds that leave a good impression. Most English fanciers that I have known are usually a pretty easy goin good bunch of folks as well :D .

The only traits I can see that can't be argued are the colors the different breeds of hound are supposed to be and that Gascons are big. EVERYTHING else has exceptions to every rule you can think up and can be argued one way or the other as far as speed, accuracy, hot/cold nose, etc.

Well, now you see, One trait that is commonly atributed to hounds is gritty, Plotts are gritty dogs but so are my black n tan dogs. Cold nosed. blueticks have been known to be cold nosed but my black n tan dogs are cold nosed. Fast, walkers have a reputation for being fast. My black and tan dogs are fast. I used to road my black and tan dogs just take the truck down the road and let em try to keep up. I have a black and tan bitch that ran 15 miles an hour easy. You could not wear her out either.
Smart, they say english are smart dogs, but my b & t dogs are smarter than all get out.

Actually I think that well bred hounds in general have these traits and just like any thiong god made on this earth every one is just a little different. thank god for the differences. otherwise this old world would be too boring.

lots of people stereotype breeds of hound, but its just like racial stereotyping in humans but not quite as offensive.
I hunt a redbone and they have a reputation for being slow-starting. Mine happens to have been, but not all redbones are slow starters. Once youre around awhile youll hear the prejudicial things different folks say about different breeds, but asking people to spell it out in black and white on the boards is kinda rude. Listen to the old timers teasing each other around a hound club and youll catch on to the stereotypes. But remember its real bad manners to stereotype someone else s hound unless you re good enough friends to be joking around and smiling while yo do it.
