Anyone know of a titled Gascon (all blue, 100 plus lbs.) bluetick. I recently bought a pup and got the papers back. Not one title in seven generations. Why aren't Gascons being competition hunted?

There out there. Get ahold of the Gascon breeders association. They'll help you out.

A lot of them tend to be cold-nosed from what I've read. This is a serious problem in comp. hunts where you want your dog to be on the hottest track and find the coon as fast as possible. A good cold-nosed dog will work out the first track it comes across which could be from a coon that passed through the day before and might be quite far away while a hot-nosed, competition bred dog will pass over a cold track and only follow a fresh one where the coon is likely still in the near area.

Gascons are usually too tall to get show titles as blueticks when full grown. A few get show titles as pups, but even at six months a gascon can be too big to meet the regular bluetick standard.
Maybe you should look for one with a swim title? Never seen one in a swim race, but I bet with those big paddle feet they can swim well! : )

Can anyone accurately tell me about gascons and just your average bluetick? Can gascons be ukc reg blueticks? What are the differences other than the appearence? Any other info would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Walker

We have a dog from registered Gascon parents. Many of the dogs in the ancestry are well-known blueticks. He is a registered bluetick with UKC and AKC. To be registered as a Gascon with ABGHA he must be inspected by someone authorized by the ABGHA to verify he meets the breed standard for Gascons - size, ear length, type of head, voice, treeing ability, etc. The breed standard for Gascons is very different from the breed standard for blueticks. He's huge with a big, blocky head, ears he often tripped over as a pup, big feet, big tail, broad chest and a voice that stops people in their tracks (even though every dog in the neighborhood may be barking they'll look at him). He will not give up a track that interests him, fresh or not.
We haven't had him inspected because we are so far from everyone qualified but the differences between him and our non-Gascon dog are very noticeable. Blueticks only need to be from registered parents to be registered with UKC and AKC. They need to meet breed standards to win titles for looks and conformation as a bluetick but not to be registered. They need to hunt fast to win hunt competitions where looks do not matter.

Thanks for all the comments, I have 2 gascons that are ukc reg blueticks, they're big and great looking dogs, at 7 months they are bigger than all my other dogs, they have great dispostions and very easy to handle, just started hunting them, they get out and don't just stand around, they go crazy over a caged coon. Anyother info about registration and gascons in general is appreciated, Thanks

They had a gascon hunt here at the coon club not to long ago i live in perry county the hunts are out there you just dont see them much but my advice is stay away from gascons and get something like a redbone or english but its whatever you want to hunt i have a mixed breed dog that isnt even full hound that will tree there is a good dog of every breed i guess

What is the difference in a blue gascon hound and American blue? Are they registered the same/ just a color trait or is it a whole nother breed

I think a gascon is a bloodline not 100% on that though
