Does anyone know much about the new Garmin GPS tracking system. Sounds like a great idea, but I'm not sold on how it will pick up in a thick canopy of trees. I think it would be nice to have using it with a conventional tracker. I also hear the battery life of the collar is only 10 hours. I have had to leave dogs for 2 or 3 days several times so that definetly needs improved if its true. I need to be able to track my dog till I find him. One things for sure I know it cant work well with a dead battery. I was just curious to hear from some one thats actually used the system.

Quote taken from above link:
Quote: Using the Garmin Astro with Hounds Right now, I would not recommend the Garmin Astro for anyone running hounds. At this point, the range is a little too short for the average hound. I may change this statement after we have completed some pretty detailed range tests in deep swamps with heavy, thick cover.
I expect to see longer range versions in the future so it may be best for Hound owners to continue using radio tracking collars until the technology improves.
The hound market is the largest segment of the tracking collar business, so I expect it will not take long for a unit to come on the market that fits the needs of our hound owners.

Has anyone actually got one yet? I went to order one and they said it was going to be july 25th before it shipped. I was hoping some of you would by one and give us a review.

Hopefully they're working bugs out and not just waiting on the product.

Well we just got the system, works great in the foot hills while we are training. It is really a sweet little thing. Tells the amount of feet our dogs are from us, shows em treein and what not. still havent had it in any thick trees, so i guess later this month will be the challenge for it. Going bear hunting end of the month. Personally, i'm kinda worried about its ability in the thick cover.

my buddy just got the GPS!! it sucks so far!! definately not made for houndsmen quite yet. the range was only good for up to 1.5 miles. and that wnot cut it for me. good for bird hunters but not our hounds!!! so i just ordered me a new quick track 6000m. i can wait until they come up with something better

I bought one myself. They are great for short range tracking (birds rabbits, etc) but not there yet for coon or big game. Nice that you don't need two devices to hunt, you cna use it for general GPS use and for tracking your dog. Garmin is a good company and you can be sure that they will come with version 2.0 with will be better for long range tracking.
I would say if you are going to use it for short range tracking it will take care of the job. Otherwise get a regular tracking system and wait for the next generation.

Ours worked just fine in flat country when we were just training the dogs. We got coverage up to about 2.5 miles but not much after that. Another feature that i wasnt to impressed with was the vest that goes around the dog that holds the collar. We walked up to where the dogs were treeing and the collar/vest was half way hanging on the dog. I know Garmin will come up with a more advanced system like others have stated, and when they do, i will definatley get one.
