When the dogs are close, maybe say 1/4 mile-1/2 mile away, and im in hilly terrain, i cant lock down a good signal in one direction. Seems easier the farther they are away.

Don't have any problems with mine. It does take a bit as how to get a signal. One most important thing is to hold it close to your chest when sweping and do so in a slow pattern. Take different sweeps at different angles, they all work the same.

never had problems with mine. just took me a while to get used to hows it pointing the dogs. if you can't get a good reading head to the top of a mountain. you get the best signal the higher up you are

The only hole I can see in Tracker is that in hilly conditions, the signal bounces off the hills and you can actually get a stronger signal from the hill behind you. Like mentioned earlier, you need to get to a high point and you won't have that problem.

That is why it is important that you hold it close to your chest so the signal in back of you does not come through.

I know what you mean by holding it close to your chest to interupt signals coming in behind you, but I have actually had signals bounce off hills and actually echo to your receiver and it doesn't matter how you hold it, you will get the strongest signal from behind.

Tim..aren't all trackers the same with the bouncing signals or are the Trackers worse? Maybe the hills have a high percentage of iron in them?

you will get bounce with all tracking systems.. i have found if i thought it was bounce from one way, just take a step or two towards the signal. the bounce will not be as strong or will go away from the true signal.....tom

The tracker differs from most systems in the aspect that you need to turn the gain down as low as possible just to get a little signal. All of the others you need to have the gain turned up in the middle I believe. That may be where people have a hard time with it as they are used to the others. PM me if you have any questions about it and I will be sure to help.

If you use 2 of the 1/2 aa size the range will be identical to the intello. You will only lose about 80 hours of life. Range will differ on the atmosphere and what is in those hills. I would say in close dense mountains you will average 2-4 miles. If it is bluffs you will get 5-7. Your best bet in the mountains if you lose a signal get up high.

that clears alot up thank you

yeah its more like bluffs and there filled with shale

it takes a double a (AA) or 2 1/2 sized AAs

that takes away 80 hrs but brings up the distance on the system?

thank you

Those 1/2 aa really make a huge difference. The collars are very sturdy and the unit is very durable despite the folding antennas. Also do not touch the antennas to your arm. You can also turn the tracker up and down to get a better signal.
