I was just wondering what you all thought of a coon pen for training purposes. I just want to know some of the pros and cons of them.

THEY ARE GOOD TO HELP MATURE A DOG AND BRING OUT THE NATURAL ABILITY. BUT BE CAREFUL WHO YOU TAKE YOUR DOG TO. CAUSE IF THEY DONT GO IN THERE WHEN THEY ARE TREEING IT CAN HURT THEIR MOUTH. IVE SEEN SOME COME OUT OF PENS WHO DIDNT HAVE MUCH MOUTH LEFT.

I am thinking about building a training pen to work my puppy in I have at the most around a half acre to fence in. Any one have any experience with this, how should the pen be constructed to where I can keep a few coons in it? Or would building a pen this small be a waist of time and money? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have a friend whos uncle has a pen like what you are talking about. I have never seen it. But he said he constructed some kind of fence and cut all the trees about 30 feet off the fence so they would'nt climb and jump over.

I was thinking about closing in about 5 acres with dog wire with t-post and rolling in the top foot of the wire, and putting a electric fence on the inside at bottom and at the roll in the wire. if any of yall have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

I believe it would be a lot cheaper and easier to get yall some traps and catch a few coons to train with. But I do know a guy that has a rabbit pen for beagles that works pratty good, but never heard of any coon pens. Keep us posted on how it works if you try it.

My Grandpa always uses traped coon for starting them on bear. he built a pen around 20 x 20 outta chainlink dug it in bout a foot and had the top closed in aswell. he put a dog house or hut in the middle so the coon could tree and the dogs would have to look up just like treein. and if the pups couldn't handle it he'd throw a dog in with a little more exp. to help out. which really fires up the young'ns. hope it helps and good luck!

whats the smallest this pen should be and should it be?

i was thinkin maybe 1 or 2 coon and a couple small puddles for their water and a couple trees and they should probably hav a variety of food to choose from?but then would there be to much scent from a coon bein in a small are runnin all over and the dogs get kinda confused?

i over think things sometimes

I've seen where people have training pens for coons. I've been in the coyote training pens. But what are the coon training pens made out of to keep the coons in. What are your opions on this method of training pups over top wild. In is there really any money to be made this way. If anyone could send me direction to a guy that owned or had one at one time that would be awesome.
