I have a 6 month hound thats is hunting crazy fast, looks to me to fast.
i have cut him back on protein with food, but still is hunting wide open..
is there anything i can do to slow him down.. I am just starting him. I have been taking him to the woods during the day for now. he has treed a few squirrel but he is running past a bunch of them too.
thanks for any help.. I have hunted dogs most of my life and i mean he is way way to fast.

How a dog hunts has very little to do with the protein in your dog food...A lot of pups just have a lot of energy. I like to feed 24/20 or a 26/10 or 27/10 ...I like the 24/20 best for all my dogs...After they wear down a little they hunt better...Hunting a pup on squirrels will not hurt the dog at all..Just quit doing it when you start coon hunting the dog. Most dogs will quit treeing squirrels on there own as they get older...A lot of guys that hunt curs hunt them on both and they seam to do OK......Most pups just start at 8-12 months old so your dog is doing pretty good already.Just take it slow and easy with him and he should turn out fine...

keep hunting him alot, that will slow him down and it will help him mature.

Put him out a on a chain an hr or two before ya hunt to burn off energy, or something along that lines, could try some calming supplements. Sounds like he should be a good one.

Don't worry about the speed he is hunting, he is a pup and in reality he is not hunting, he is running. As he matures and starts to learn to use his nose he will learn on his own that he has to slow down to work a track. I wouldn't drop the protien in his feed, cause when he does start learning to drive a track, you want him to have the drive and endurance to finish it.

Tie a long chain to him. I'm being sarcastic but I have heard of ppl doing it. Most ppl wish they had a hard fast hunting dog, there are plenty of them "close hunters" for sale all around and lots of older guys or guys that patch hunt looking for those dogs. But I want one that does everything fast especially hunting.

I see slot of mention of getting the dogs off the squirrels. I have B&T about a year old that is for the most part really good on coons but has started treeing squirrels in the yard. I have never hunted squirrels with him and was wondering about it hindering his prior coon training.

If you don't want him treeing squirrels just growl him & pull him off the tree. If you don't mind it, it won't effect him treeing coons you may just have some slick coon trees with a squirrel in them if you hunt as soon as the sun goes down. I have a young grade walker that trees squirrels in the day time and coon at night and so far she hasn't had any slick trees at night because if the day time squirrels. I actually hopes she keeps treeing them.
