I think it's like anything else. I do not like the trappers who are setting their traps illegally just as I do like the deer hunters running their dogs illegally. They make us look bad. It's the bad apple examples that the ANTI's use against us.

I have no problems with trappers!!! Trap some myself! The people I have trouble with are the road hunters.. shoot it and let it lay!! Those are the people i have trouble with!! Unless they shot a yote.. then its ok.. but when you see fox, coon, deer, beaver, badgers & muskrat laying dead and no one did anything with them.. those are the people that make my blood boil!! What a waste!!

No problems with trappers, i run quite a trap line, and often check me traps while im coohunting, same with everything else, if they got permission like i do, they have as much right to be there as myself!!

I never had a problem with Trappers, either. Like anything else, you have good ones and bads ones and the bad ones need to be policed out, they do not do anyone any good. Good trappers are no different than hunters, they just do it with a different piece of gear. As Buckshot said, the bad ones give the anti's ammo to beat us back over the head which only hurts our cause. The last thing we need to do is give those sheisskopfs any ammo.

Well, thats cool to know...

I know some southern guys I ran into did'nt like trappers 'cause their dogs get caught in the traps at times.....

Anyway, I've been known to Fox trap a bit....here's a few highlights...

Image
One of my favorite spots....normally takes 18-20 Fox per year...

Image

A fine double on Fox. Note the catch circles. Place did 12 Fox in 10 days.

Image

Another fine double....same place different day. My old dog Kirby, entertaining the Fox. He was a Coy-dog. His sire was an Eastern Coyote.....confirmed.

RIP-Kirby old friend- 5-1-93/1-22-05

I am a trapper and I am a coonhunter and I have a question to ask. My brother in law told me today that most coonhunters dont really like trappers. Is this true? If so why? I can understand if a trapper didnt tell you he had traps out in a place he knew you hunted. That is unethical. I personally try to tell everyone with permission to the land I am trapping that there is traps in the are. I just wanted some other opinions on the subject

Because trappers in my state of Va. can take an unlimited number of coons, where we as coon hunters can only take 2 a night. I talked to a trapper that traps in our area, and he told me he took 180 coon last year, where I only took 14 (by my choice), cause I like to have something to chase the next night. But I've heard of guys that coondoggit, that are pigs just as well. Now if you are in an area that is overrun with coon, go for it. But my area has limited coon, but we still have pigs that will shoot 3 coon out of 1 tree. Go figure. But on the other side, if a trapper is making a living off selling coon hides, I can appreciate that as well. I forgot to mention the chance that a trapper will accidentally catch the coonhound, as a friend of mine got his dog caught in a coyote cage trap. Luckily all we had to do is open the cage door and let the dog out.

Most trappers I know trap because they are drawing some kind of disability/ government support check and too sorry to actually get a real job. They spend their time digging ginseng out and in season and catching the coon we try so hard to keep in a area. They smile all the way to mailbox every afternoon fresh outta bed by noon ready to go check their sets. I'm sure some of them are legit but I haven't met any.

I run dogs as well as trap. I only trap for pleasure and keeping the tradition going. Some people abuse the right to trap and wipe out every critter they can. If you do trap just be respectful to nature and fellow hunters and don't overdo it. Running my hound is a lot more fun than just walking up to a trap expecting a catch.
